Chief executives and medical specialists dominate the top of the wage scale, with healthcare roles claiming the highest salary spot in half of all states. Using Bureau of Labor Statistics data from May 2025, researchers mapped the most lucrative careers, filtering for occupations with at least 1,000 employees.
Chief executives lead the pack in 14 states, while family medicine physicians hold the top position in seven. The geographic distribution highlights a significant concentration of wealth within the medical sector, despite varying growth projections. For example, radiologists command the highest earnings in Pennsylvania, while cardiologists top the list in Georgia, New York, and Texas. While some high-paying roles like financial managers show strong future growth, many of the top-tier healthcare positions remain stable but are not necessarily expanding rapidly at the national level. This reliance on the medical field has become a defining feature of the modern labor market. In 2025, the healthcare sector effectively sustained overall employment levels, accounting for over 100% of national job growth when excluding other industries. As ADP chief economist Nela Richardson noted, the United States is shifting toward a healthcare-driven economy, moving beyond traditional service models to rely on clinical roles as the primary engine for wage and employment stability.
