Speaking on the Power of Advice podcast, the 58-year-old executive urged Gen Z workers to prioritize reliability and the willingness to tackle unglamorous tasks over chasing dream roles on day one.

Young professionals expecting immediate career trajectory milestones are setting themselves up for disappointment, according to Amazon CEO Andy Jassy. Speaking on the Power of Advice podcast, the 58-year-old executive urged Gen Z workers to prioritize reliability and the willingness to tackle unglamorous tasks over chasing dream roles on day one.

Jassy, who has spent nearly three decades at Amazon, argues that professional growth requires a foundational period of grunt work. He characterizes the most successful employees as those who demonstrate meticulousness and tirelessness, effectively building a reputation for dependability before seeking advancement. Those who attempt to bypass the foundational stage often find their careers stalling, as they lack the necessary operational experience to handle increased responsibilities.

Beyond grit, Jassy emphasizes the importance of adaptability. Reflecting on his own path, he noted that he did not aim for the C-suite from the start; his early years included stints in sports broadcasting, retail, and coaching. It was only after these experimental years that he pursued an MBA at Harvard, leading him to join Amazon in 1997 when the company employed just 250 people. His ability to pivot—eventually pivoting from marketing to launching Amazon Web Services in 2006—defined his rise to CEO in 2021. He encourages young workers to view their early careers as a process of elimination, testing various roles to discover genuine interests rather than clinging to a rigid, pre-defined plan.
