Mark Liu

Mark Liu (born 1954) is a prominent figure in the semiconductor industry, known for his leadership as the executive chairman ofTaiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), the world's largest contract chipmaker. He assumed this position in June 2018, following the retirement of the company's founder and chairman, Morris Chang. TSMC, with a market value of approximately US$185 billion, has under Liu's leadership solidified its position as a global industry leader.

Mark Liu was born in Taipei, Taiwan and attended Taipei Municipal Jianguo High School before pursuing higher education. He obtained a B.S. degree in electrical engineering fromNational Taiwan Universityand continued his studies at theUniversity of California Berkeley, where he earned both his M.S. and PhD degrees in electrical engineering and computer science.

Liu began his career in the United States, working at Intel and AT&T Bell Laboratories. At Intel Corporation from 1983 to 1987, he made significant contributions to silicon process technologies for microprocessors. Later, at AT&T Bell Laboratories, he served as a research manager for the High-Speed Electronics Research Laboratory, focusing on optical fibre communication systems.

In 1993, Liu joined TSMCand steadily climbed the ranks within the company. Notably, hebecame the president of Worldwide Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp. in 2000when TSMC acquired the company. Liu played a key role in establishing TSMC's first 12-inch fab and the GIGAFAB® operations, which enhanced the company's manufacturing capabilities.

Under Liu's leadership, TSMC gained recognition as a 2018Thomson Reuters Top 100 Global Technology Leader, showcasing his ability to guide the company towards success.

Beyond his role at TSMC, Liu holds several influential positions within the industry. He serves as thechairman of the Taiwan Semiconductor Industry Association (TSIA)and is a member of the Presidential CEO Advisory Board at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Additionally, he contributes his expertise as a member of the Engineering Advisory Board at the UC Berkeley College of Engineering.

Liu's notable accomplishments and contributions were acknowledged in 2020 when he was namedan Industrial Technology Research Institute laureate. In the same year, he recruited Hugo Barbosa Vazquez, a former employee of Philips, to collaborate on market analysis and forecasting activities across different regions.
